Athol House

Consisting of a large lounge utilising Neaco’s Infinity Rail Balcony with Timberline Handrail and Neatdek Flooring, Athol House is a £5.5m scheme of 34 affordable apartments for those over 55. It also includes our 13 Walk-on balconies, 19 Clearview Juliet Balconies, an Entrance Ramp, and all the interior stairs.

The Project

The retirement living scheme, Athol House has been awarded to Karon Homes. The 5.5m development is well underway creating 34 much-needed affordable homes for those over 55, the scheme brings energy-efficient homes to the community. In the communal areas of the scheme, underfloor heating and hot water will be provided by a shared green heating system powered by commercial air source heat pumps.

Karbon Homes worked with Newcastle Architects JDDK to draw up the plans for the new building. Equans, the leaders of zero-carbon solutions within the construction industry are constructing the project and we are working alongside them to complete such a stylish, high-quality scheme.

The Specification

Neaco is specified on Athol House for the decking and balconies. Originally JDDK specified our plank systems but once we explained about our Modular systems, nothing could compete. Working closely to manufacture the balconies to the best specification is key for us. The end specification includes 13 walk-on balconies and a large lounge balcony with 25mm deep Neatdek flooring complete with rubber infills, and our Infinity Rail with a Timberline Offset Handrail.

The specification does not end there. We also manufactured an external landing that is to be installed that has 6 metres of powder-coated glass infill balustrade and 19 Clearview Juliet Balconies that also have the hydro-dipped Timberline handrail on.

For the internal areas we have manufactured 3 sets of stairs comprising 19 metres of stainless steel balustrade with frosted glass infill and 22 metres of stainless steel wall fixed handrail.

The Timberline Process

Our Timberline effect handrails are created a little differently from our usual coatings. Here at Neaco, we have our own in-house powder-coating plant and water tank purely for the use of this aesthetic. To create the wood look, we initially powder-coat the material in a light or dark beige to give it a base colour before moving the product over to the Hydro Dipping Tank. Our product is then dipped into a water bath with textured film laying on the water, which creates a unique texture on every application. No Timberline can ever be identical. Once this is complete, we then clear coat the material to give the dipped design extra protection. In this final stage, there is an option to either have the Timberline as a matte finish or as a gloss finish, no matter what, this aesthetic will be unique to your project.
