Aluminium Decking for High-Rise: The Low-Risk Choice for Major Projects

For Tier 1 contractors and architects working on large-scale developments, the choice of decking is no longer just an aesthetic one. In a post-Grenfell regulatory environment, aluminium decking for high-rise projects has shifted from a niche specification to the industry standard. This shift is driven by the urgent need for verified performance, longevity, and ease of installation in “relevant buildings.”

1. Navigating Approved Document B (Fire Safety)

The primary driver for specifying aluminium decking for high-rise developments is non-combustibility. Since the 2018 amendment to UK Building Regulations, materials used in the external walls of buildings over 11 metres must achieve a European Classification of A1 or A2-s1, d0.

While some composite products claim “fire-rated” status, they often only reach Class B, which is insufficient for high-rise balconies. Neaco’s A1 and A2 fire-rated decking is inherently non-combustible, removing the risk of specification errors and ensuring smooth sign-off from Building Control and insurers.

2. Speed of Installation and Modular Efficiency

On major construction sites, time is a significant cost factor. Advanced aluminium systems, such as Neaco’s Neatdek, are engineered for modularity. Because these systems are supplied in custom lengths with “hot-work free” interlocking designs, they significantly reduce on-site labour hours compared to timber.

This modularity allows for easier integration with steel balcony frames and fire-resistant pedestals, streamlining the transition between trades and shortening project timelines.

3. Structural Integrity and Spanning Capabilities

One of the most overlooked benefits of aluminium decking for high-rise construction is its strength-to-weight ratio. Aluminium profiles can often span greater distances between supports than timber or composite alternatives.

Reduced Substructure: Superior spanning capabilities mean fewer joists or support pedestals are required, lowering material costs.

Lower Dead Loads: Reducing the weight of the decking allows for more efficient structural designs, potentially lowering the overall steel or concrete costs of the building.

4. Performance: Drainage and Maintenance

In high-density developments, water management is a critical design consideration. Professional-grade aluminium decking, like our Neatdek system, is designed to prevent water pooling while managing drainage.

Furthermore, from a Facilities Management (FM) perspective, aluminium is the ultimate “low-cost” material. It requires no chemical treatments or staining throughout its 60+ year design life.

For B2B clients, this translates to a much lower “Whole Life Cost” as seen in our recent commercial case studies.

5. Sustainability and BREEAM Ratings

For projects aiming for high BREEAM or LEED ratings, aluminium’s recyclability is a major asset. It is 100% recyclable indefinitely. Specifying locally manufactured, recyclable aluminium decking for high-rise projects supports the “Circular Economy” goals now required by many major developers.

The Neaco Advantage for Tier 1 Contractors

We offer more than just the material. Our technical support includes:

  • CAD and BIM Objects: To assist in the early-stage design process.

  • Load Calculations: Ensuring compliance with BS8579:2020 standards for pedestrian surfaces.

  • Bespoke Fabrication: Pre-engineered systems that arrive on-site ready for immediate installation.
